Cybercab Rider Problems and Fixes: Ten Days of Real-World Lessons

Ten days into paid Cybercab service in Austin, the picture from real riders is more interesting than any launch speech. The car itself is comfortable, quiet, and in many ways a genuine step forward — but the service around it is still learning. The complaints that keep surfacing are not catastrophic failures. They are the awkward middle ground of a very new system: long waits, strange stopping spots, an occasional screen glitch, and driving that sometimes hesitates. What follows is a full rundown of the problems riders have reported since September 3, and the fixes — both the ones Tesla built into the car and the ones riders have figured out for themselves.

Long Waits and Surge-Style Pricing #

Waiting is the most common complaint, and it comes in two flavors: the app’s estimate and the actual price.

What Riders Are Reporting #

The Verge’s reporter watched the app quote more than an hour for a ride under two miles on a Friday evening, then waited about 45 minutes for the car to arrive; his next two waits were roughly 40 and 25 minutes. A rider who went by the handle TexasTSLA, an owner of four Teslas, posted that his evening trip ended about three miles from where he asked to go because the app said his destination exceeded the vehicle’s remaining service time. And the best-known case belongs to Reggie Overton, a self-described Tesla Ambassador whose 2.3-mile trip was quoted at one hour and six minutes.

Pricing has been just as volatile. On launch day, one rider shared a screenshot showing a Cybercab fare of about $6 versus $12 for a Model Y robotaxi on the same route. By the weekend, demand had flipped the math: for a 1.3-mile trip, the Cybercab quoted $15.24, the Model Y $12.04, and Uber’s cheapest option $6.41. A crowd of curious riders and content creators — one influencer spent five hours in a Cybercab in a single day — pushed fares above Uber and the Model Y at the same time.

How to Handle It #

None of this requires heroic measures. Tesla’s refund policy is real: the company refunded Overton within a day after support acknowledged the routing bug, and refunds are evaluated case by case through the app or the support line at (877) 798-3752. Wait estimates do settle — Tesla’s own guidance is that fares should drop as more Cybercabs join the fleet. For now, the practical advice is to treat the first estimate as a ceiling, compare the Cybercab against the Model Y option in the same app before confirming, and check whether an Uber is genuinely cheaper for short trips during peak hours.

The Stop-and-Drop Problem #

The most visible issue is where the car chooses to stop. Videos posted since launch day show Cybercabs halting in the middle of a travel lane instead of pulling to the curb, and one widely shared clip shows a Cybercab parked in a commercial lot’s driving aisle, boxing in the cars behind it. The Verge’s reporter had his own version of this at Barton Springs, where the gold two-seater partially blocked a narrow road outside a popular swimming hole while drivers stacked up behind it.

The car does give you ways out of these situations. On the touchscreen or in the app, “Pull Over” asks the vehicle to move to the side of the road when it is safe to do so. Between the dome lights there is also a physical Stop button — engraved in Braille — that ends the ride, brings the car to a stop with the hazard lights on, and connects you to Tesla Robotaxi Support. If you are already stopped in a bad spot, the same two-way audio link lets support reroute the vehicle or dispatch help. Before stepping out into traffic, the screen shows a camera view of the surroundings so you can check for bikes and cars before the door opens.

Doors, Screens, and Little Glitches #

The butterfly doors are the most dramatic part of the car, and they come with a known complaint: several passengers have reported the doors opening so quickly that they strike people standing near them. Tesla opens them through a button in the app, and the advice from early riders is simply to step back and wait for the door to fully open before approaching. In the cabin, MotorTrend’s Billy Rebol hit a different kind of glitch on September 7: the center screen crashed to an error page mid-trip, the car drove a loop around the block instead of heading to his hotel, and he had to open the door manually to get out. He ended the trip free of charge through the app and filed an error report. Other minor findings from the first week: the climate control will not go below 66 degrees Fahrenheit — a real limitation in 96-degree Austin, and a worry for future hot-weather cities — and the windshield wipers once switched themselves on in bright sun, for no apparent reason. The absence of mirrors also leaves some riders feeling oddly cut off from their surroundings, even though they have nothing to check them for.

When It Drives Hesitantly #

The driving itself has drawn two very different reviews. Fans describe smooth, comfortable rides with no interventions needed. Other riders and journalists describe a system that brakes nervously, hesitates at stop signs before right turns, and second-guesses lane choices — The Verge compared the feel to a “slightly stoned teenager.” One widely shared clip shows a Cybercab waiting a long time at a stop sign while an impatient driver in a normal car goes around it. In a separate incident, the car drifted toward a lane that would have forced an unwanted left turn onto the highway before correcting itself. None of these rose to the level of a collision, and Tesla has pushed over-the-air updates aimed at intersection behavior. The Controls Tesla Builds In #

For everything that can go wrong, the emergency guide explains what the car does on its own. The Cybercab carries at least ten airbags. In a collision, the vehicle is designed to stop in its lane, switch on the hazard lights, lower the windows to a ventilation position, disconnect the high-voltage battery, unlock the doors, and open two-way audio with Tesla Robotaxi Support, which can call 911 if no one answers inside. Riders who believe they are in immediate danger can pull firmly and completely upward on the door lever to trigger the emergency mechanical release, which ends the trip and brings the car to a stop in its lane. Opening a door or unbuckling a seatbelt at speed disengages autonomous driving and puts the vehicle in park — there is no scenario in the guide where the Cybercab keeps driving with a door open. If the car loses power entirely, the same mechanical release opens both doors manually.

Refunds, Lost Items, and Cleaning Fees #

Tesla’s support policies fill in the rest. If you leave something in the car, the Lost Item Report form lives in the app under Ride History, and found items are kept for ten days. Cleaning is priced by severity: $50 for moderate messes like food spills and minor stains, $150 for severe messes such as biowaste or smoking. Trip issues are handled case by case, with feedback submitted through the app or the support line, and refunds issued to the original payment method when validated. The Bottom Line #

Read together, the first ten days tell a consistent story. The complaints cluster around the fleet-management layer — wait estimates, routing, drop-off selection, and pricing — rather than around the core autonomy. Nobody has reported a serious crash, and the car’s own safety systems are more comprehensive than any robotaxi that has come before. But a ride-hailing service lives or dies on whether it shows up when it says it will and drops you where you asked. Those are the lessons riders keep teaching Tesla in public, one video at a time, and they are the same lessons the company will need to solve before Cybercab rides leave Austin.
