Cybercab Costs: Faster Production, Brake-by-Wire, and a $34 Trillion Bet
Three Cybercab stories landed in the same week, and they do not look related at first. Tesla’s stock climbed on a claim about production speed. A supplier story confirmed that the car’s brakes have no hydraulics at all. And two research houses published forecasts that differ by trillions of dollars. Look closer, and all three are the same story: what does the Cybercab actually cost, and how much of that advantage survives contact with the real world?
The Brake System That Killed the Hydraulics #
The Cybercab goes further than dropping the steering wheel. Its braking system has no pedal, no brake fluid, and no central master cylinder. Tesla calls the setup “brake-by-wire”: each caliper is driven by its own electromechanical actuator instead of a column of fluid running from a pedal to the wheels. Strip away the plumbing, and you lose parts, weight, and assembly steps at the same time. The design also lets the car apply different braking force to each wheel independently, which should help vehicle control in hard stops.
Why Tesla Went This Route #
The logic is the same as everywhere else on this car: fewer components, lower manufacturing cost, and more control authority for the software. A robotaxi that does all its own braking has no reason to carry the mechanical parts a human driver would need. The trade-off is that brake-by-wire is a newer technology with less field history than a conventional system — exactly the kind of detail regulators tend to ask about.
The Supply Question #
Tesla has not named the supplier for the system. Brembo, Bosch, and ZF all have relevant technology in reserve. Brembo already has a public relationship with Tesla and has shown its Sensify electronic braking system, but the company has not confirmed that it supplies the Cybercab. Tesla is also not the first automaker to put brake-by-wire on sale: the Exeed EX7 in China is generally credited as the first production model with the technology.
A Motor Without Rare Earths, and a Tiny Battery #
Around the brake news, more specs have filtered out. The single front motor makes 163 kW, and Tesla says the whole unit is 18 percent smaller and 25 percent lighter than a comparable motor — and uses no rare-earth materials, which Musk calls “extremely difficult” to achieve without sacrificing range. The battery is a 4680 dry-cathode pack rated at 47.6 kWh, good for roughly 673 km on the first EPA-cycle data. At 1,412 kg, the Cybercab is the smallest vehicle Tesla has ever built, a two-door, two-seat machine with no driver’s seat. It carries eight external cameras and a suite of sensors but no lidar, running on an upgraded Hardware 4 computer; Tesla has not published the full autonomous-driving spec sheet.
The Production Claim That Moved the Stock #
On September 8, Tesla shares rose nearly 4 percent to close at $368.16, then eased 0.13 percent in overnight trading. The trigger was a post from Elon Musk: the Cybercab line was redesigned to build cars more than five times faster than conventional manufacturing. The “unboxed” process assembles vehicle modules in parallel and frames the car in one step at the end, which Tesla says cuts the line’s footprint roughly in half and unlocks far more capacity.

A Quiet Safety Update in FSD v14.3.9 #
Alongside the production news, Tesla started pushing FSD (Supervised) v14.3.9 with a new Automatic Collision Evasion feature. During manual driving, if the system decides a frontal crash is imminent and braking alone will not avoid it, it can take over and try to steer around the obstacle. It can also intervene when the driver is not paying enough attention or when FSD looks likely to disengage unexpectedly. The release notes are careful to say this is not full autonomy: FSD still requires a supervised driver, and the new feature is an extra layer of active safety for specific situations.

With the car now carrying passengers in Austin, the cost debate has moved from concept to arithmetic, and the spread between forecasts is enormous.
ARK’s $34 Trillion Opportunity #
Cathie Wood’s ARK Investment Management has long been the most bullish voice. ARK estimates that a scaled robotaxi network could charge about $0.25 per mile — less than a tenth of what a human-driven ride costs in the United States today. Extrapolated, ARK sees roughly $34 trillion of enterprise value available across global robotaxi platforms by 2030, with Tesla positioned to capture a meaningful share.
Goldman’s Counterpoint #
Goldman Sachs is more restrained. If the Cybercab reaches a per-vehicle cost of $20,000–$30,000 at scale, against $50,000–$100,000 of upfront cost for rival autonomous vehicles, Goldman figures the Cybercab could enjoy something like a $0.05–$0.30 per mile cost advantage. But the bank argues that autonomous-driving software and expansion into more markets matter more than the manufacturing cost alone, and it keeps a Neutral rating with a $360 price target.
Morningstar’s Middle Ground #
Morningstar sits between them. It holds a $450 fair value estimate for Tesla — about 22 percent above the September 8 close — and expects the robotaxi service to end up roughly 25 percent cheaper than human-driven ride-hail. It also assigns the stock a “very high” uncertainty rating, which is a polite way of saying the range of outcomes is wide.
What to Watch Next #
Five-times-faster production is a claim until it is a delivery number. The near-term tells are actual output data, FSD safety records as the fleet grows, and whether Tesla starts publishing operating metrics like daily orders per vehicle, utilization, and revenue or cost per mile. Regulatory progress in new cities matters just as much.
